Cameron University enrollment numbers continue to climb

Cameron University’s enrollment numbers are continuing to climb.

For the spring semester enrollment increased over 5 % than it did from a year ago.

Cameron University's President Dr. John MacArthur says he’s very excited to see this trend and notes the biggest trend seems to be concurrent enrollment with high school students.

“The biggest growth though continues to be at the concurrent level, almost 650 high school students are enrolled at Cameron University this spring, which is a great trend. I’m excited that our area high school students are trying to get a head start on college and keep their options open whether they want to go to career tech or to higher education, but it’s good they get a chance to try it on for size.”

Dr. MacArthur also noted an increase in graduate students.

“At the other end of our student spectrum we also saw more than a 10 percent growth in the number of graduate students, whether that’s in business, education, or psychology and mental health fields we also saw some good growth there.”

Dr. MacArthur says the increase in enrollment skills is likely due to people wanting to increase their skill set.

“The increase we’re seeing is individuals trying to increase their skills in order for better employment opportunities. I think inflation contributes to that a little bit. A wage level that was comfortable for someone five years ago, it just no longer gets the bills paid. So, people learning to expand their skills. I think another part of it is the increase in opportunities here in Lawton - Fort Sill and Southwest Oklahoma. I mean, there’s a sense of excitement that comes with FISTA, Goodyear’s growth, and other industries here. Certainly health care and the need for more teachers. I think each of those things contributes to more people coming back to college and attending Cameron.

Dr. MacArthur says that more students mean more opportunities that can be offered.

“When you have more students you can offer more sections of classes, you can offer different classes. So, I’m excited about the enrollment growth, because I look forward to getting into our catalog and offering some electives and some of the student organizations and activities that we’ve had in the past. I think this enrollment growth is going to give us the chance to really help our students have an even better experience.”
