This week I sat down with the Cameron University Faculty Advisor for the Collegian newspaper, Associate Professor David Bublitz, to discuss the recent win for the publication, taking the state's highest honor in the Oklahoma Press Association's Better Newspaper Contest, with the 2025 Sequoyah Award.
The Collegian competes in the College News Media division against other collegiate publications across the state for the annual Better Newspaper Contest and you can listen to our interview here to learn more about how it works and the honors students brought home this summer.
I try to remain objective, as my journalistic integrity demands, but as the managing editor for the Collegian over the course of spring and fall 2025 when we produced the content that was submitted for this contest, I am incredible proud to have played a small part in bringing home our THIRD consecutive Sequoyah award and our FIFTH total.
The Collegian has a distinguished and extensive history as one of the longest running college newspapers in Oklahoma, and began celebrating their century of consistent publications this past spring.
Any Cameron student is welcome to apply and join the Collegian staff, you do not have to be a Journalism and Media Production major, or even have experience with news writing or photography. There are a number of roles on staff that help keep the publication successful each semester.
