Cameron University Dedicates McMahon Field

WEB EXCLUSIVE

A ceremony held Tuesday saw Cameron University dedicate a new softball field and athletic center, the first completed project of Campus Master Plan 2025 and the final project of the presidency of Dr. Cindy Ross.

McMahon Field and Athletics Center was made possible by a $1 million gift from Lawton’s McMahon Foundation, which is the largest gift in Cameron athletics history. After brief remarks from President Ross and Aggie softball player Sonora Zukerman, McMahon Foundation Board of Trustees chairman Kenneth Bridges threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

A large crowd was on hand for the ceremonies, which included tours of the new athletic center and a three-inning game between a team of Cameron softball alumni and friends, and a team of Lawton firefighters and police officers. Attendees were treated to free ballpark food and a free raffle, and also took in the sight of the game ball being delivered by parachute. Sgt. First Class (Ret.) Dana Bowman, a former member of the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team and a double amputee, made the jump and delivered the ball in front of a cheering crowd.

Ross said that as the last major project of her tenure, McMahon Field is “special.” But, she added, the various buildings completed have “all been uniquely special, and important to me and to the university.”

In a release, the university said McMahon Field and Athletics Center is the latest in more than $60 million worth of construction projects completed during Ross’s tenure as president. She will step down from the post at the end of June.
