This week's episode features the youngest Community Focus guest I have had the pleasure of interviewing. 13 year-old Tyler Heffner and his mom Audrina joined me to discuss his recent journey as a competitor in the 2026 Youth Athlete of the Year contest.
Tyler is a below-the-knee amputee, and has adjusted to life with a limb difference since his last surgery at age 7. He began running a couple of years ago and has since competed in more than twenty 5-k races, a half-marathon and advanced into the semi-finals finishing 2nd in his group for the Youth Athlete of the Year, representing Fort Sill proudly.
Listen to Tyler's story in this episode, and hear his advice to others who may be dealing with limb differences and would like to run or become an athlete.
Audrina (Tyler's mom) shared how her son's recent upgrade to a running blade prosthetic, courtesy of Limbs for Life and the Challenged Athletes programs in OKC made a world of difference for Tyler's ability to continue competing in 5-Ks.
We wish Tyler the best of luck on his next race and as he finishes this season of baseball on Fort Sill.
