Fox Disputes Justice Department's Stand On Subpoena
The Justice Department is at a standoff with Fox News over whether it informed the cable channel and its parent company News Corp. of a wide-ranging subpoena for a Fox reporter's phone records. Fox said it was taken by surprise. But the Justice Department said it told News Corp. by email, fax and certified letter of the subpoena — and told reporter James Rosen directly.

Redistricting Issue Heats Up In Texas
Texas Gov. Rick Perry called state lawmakers into a special session to deal with district maps used in the 2012 elections. A federal court had ordered new maps to better represent the growing Hispanic population.

Pope Francis: Even Atheists Can Be Redeemed
After the popes comments, headlines proclaimed, "Even Atheists Can Go To Heaven." A Vatican spokesman quickly intervened and said this was not the case. Still, the remarks were in keeping with a pope who is emphasizing inclusiveness and wants to speak to a global audience that reaches far beyond the Catholic Church.

Al-Qaida Letter Reprimands Difficult Employee
While AP West Africa Bureau Chief Rukmini Callimachi was covering the French military intervention in Mali, she gathered six trash bags full of abandoned al-Qaida documents from buildings used by the organization. Included was a copy of a scathing letter sent to Mokhtar Belmokhtar, which described him as a prima donna. He later quit the organization and formed his own group — carrying out attacks that killed 101 people.

China's Leaders Promise To Speed Up Economic Reform
The Communist Party's new leadership has pledged to change China's slowing economy by putting a greater emphasis on private enterprise and reining in huge but far less profitable state-owned businesses. Economists say the party has no choice but to update if it wants to stay in power, but they doubt that a genuine overhaul is in the works.

Nepalese Climber Gives Up For Now On Regaining Everest Title
Five years ago when he was 76, a Nepalese climber became the oldest person to scale Mount Everest. Last week, an 80-year-old Japanese climber took the crown. The Nepalese climber has had to give up on his attempt to reclaim the title because of bad weather.
