Fed Leaves Interest Rates And Bond Purchase Plan Untouched
The Federal Reserve will continue its program of purchasing $85 billion in securities and will leave the target interest rate for federal funds untouched to support the U.S. economy, the U.S. central bank said in a policy update issued Wednesday afternoon.
Rain Pounds Missouri Town, Floods Rivers
In Missouri, several communities have been ravaged by flooding. Among the hardest hit has been Waynesville. The town of about 5,000 people has been hit by rain storms — including some 7 inches on Tuesday, and another 6 inches Wednesday. Nearby rivers and creeks have overflowed.

A bipartisan group of senators announced a deal Thursday to protect college students from an interest rate hike on federal student loans. Those rates doubled on July 1.

Senate Passes Student Loan Legislation To Lower Interest Rates
After much drama, the Senate finally voted on a student loan bill that would tie the borrower's rate to the 10-year Treasury note on Wednesday. The proposal is a bipartisan compromise and similar both to a House plan and one offered by President Obama.

Fed To Keep Short-Term Interest Rates Low
Federal Reserve policymakers met in Washington and decided to leave interest rates where they are. Other changes were announced, though. For the first time, the Fed identified an exact unemployment rate, 6.5 percent, at which it would begin to raise interest rates.
