Lawton - Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce looking for Civics Bee contestants

Lawton Fort Sill Chamber of Commerce is looking for local students to take part in their Civics Bee.

Director of Community Development Melissa Beck says the chamber is partnering with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to host this competition.

“The Civics Bee is put on by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Oklahoma State Chamber and we have been asked as a local chamber to host here in this community and it’s open to all middle school students in this region, they have to submit an essay and we’ll have essay judges that will read them and decide if they get into the competition, then there is a live competition, very much like a spelling bee but they answer questions on civics and government and that will be held on March 7th at the Albert Johnson Senior Conference Center.”

Beck says students will compete at the local, state, and national levels.

“So, once the kids get their essays approved, they get into the live event on March 7th, it’s a cash prize, I think first prize is $500 dollars, and then they would go on to the state level at the Oklahoma State Chamber in Oklahoma City and then from there the winners go to the national level in Washington D.C. and the top prize once they get that far is $5,000.”

The deadline to submit an essay is Monday January 22nd.
