Fort Sill celebrates U.S. Army's 248th birthday

The Army celebrates their birthday every year on June 14th.

This year the Army turned 248 years old.

Fort Sill celebrated by having a multi-cannon live fire demonstration and a cake cutting.

Command Sergeant Major Jason Obermuller says this demonstration highlights the Army’s greatest resource.

“So we are celebrating, commemorating, the Army’s 248th birthday, by bringing all of our fire power across our brigade out here in highlighting what our soldiers and leaders do across the army, conducting a culmination of a brigade flash live fire hit and making it a point to highlight resource in the army and that’s the army soldier.”

Fort Sill also had a cake cutting and per tradition, the cake is cut by sabers by the youngest and oldest soldier on base.

This year the lucky soldiers were 17-year-old Private Yadiel Rivera and 63-year-old Major Felix Kumai.

Major Kumai has been the oldest soldier for 3 years in a row, he says having the honor to cut the cake is a humbling experience.

“A humbling experience, it’s nice, serving people, seeing people.”

June 14th 1775 is the day the Continental Congress voted to create the Continental Army, it is now celebrated as the U.S. Army’s Birthday.
