House Bill 1368 would provide tax credit to caregivers

The Oklahoma Senate approved House Bill 1368 this week.

The principal senate author for the bill was Lawton Republican John Michael Montgomery.

House Bill 1368 gives a tax credit to caregivers who provide many hours of unpaid care every year.

Senator John Michael Montgomery understands the hardship that’s put on caregivers and this is a way to help them out financially.

“There’s a lot of time and effort that people put into caring for someone, so this is just more of acknowledgment of the kind of time, the resources that are required to do that and basically it’s just a small way of trying to help them out with bills and incurred costs", said Senator Montgomery

If the bill becomes a law, it will provide a $2,000 tax credit to cover caregiving expenses.

If the eligible family member is a veteran or has dementia, the annual credit is increased to $3,000.

The bill now goes back to the house for reconsideration.
