This week's Community Focus informed the Lawton community about an important event happening from 8 a.m. to noon, Sat. June 6th at the Cancer Centers of Southwest Oklahoma facility (104 NW 31st St-Lawton).

Amanda Purser met with Oncology Program Manager, Angelina Baker, to discuss the FREE one-day Skin Cancer Screening.

The screenings are by appointment only and you can make yours by calling (580) 536-2121 to schedule now. They want to ensure there is enough staff to facilitate those interested in taking advantage of this opportunity.

Skin cancer is "highly preventable with regular screenings and lifestyle changes," so be sure to take care of your body by getting a quick and easy screening done.

Baker informed the KCCU audience that if they have an area of concern, whether it indicates the common ABC symptoms of melanoma (A-Asymmetry, B-Border irregularity, C-Color inconsistency) or is a new spot or one that continues to return, you should get it inspected Saturday if possible or see your healthcare provider to ensure you get a proper diagnosis.

This screening event consists of quick 2-3 minute appointments inspecting the area of concern or the recommended back and scalp that are harder for most people to see and monitor. Baker said no pathology will be done and while people won't leave with a definitive cancer diagnosis, they will have recommendations to follow-up on areas of concern, or peace of mind if the board certified dermatology professionals don't think they should worry.

Cancer Centers of SW OK offer these periodic free screening events to correspond with the related awareness months, in an effort to help keep our community safe and healthy. Early detection and quick reaction to potential cancers is the best recommendation for positive outcomes by the American Cancer Society.
