It’s Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
On Tuesday Mayor Stan Booker issued a proclamation recognizing May as Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Asian American Pacific Islander Month is celebrated every year in May to celebrate contributions that generations of AAPI’s have made to American History, society, and culture.
City of Lawton’s Race Relations Committee Member Larry Faaita is Samoan and says the proclamation gives him a sense of unity.
“I’ve been in Lawton for 34 years and this is the first time I feel like I’m really part of something.”
Faaita says he’s honored to be a part of diversity conversations in Lawton.
“So here lately, being included in the Race Relations Commission and being with the diversity and inclusion committee in Lawton Public Schools, I feel like we’re really are doing our best to include everyone. So, I like that.”
Mary Fountain with the City of Lawton’s Race Relation Committee is Japanese and accepted the proclamation as the Asian representative, while Faaita accepted the proclamation as the Pacific Islander representative.
