Baylor Names Seminary Dean as Interim President

Waco, TX – Baylor University today named its seminary dean to be interim president.

The move comes one month after regents at the world's largest Baptist university in Waco -- fired their president.

David Garland has been dean of Baylor's George W. Truett Theological Seminary since June 2007.

He'll be interim president but will not be considered a candidate during the search for a permanent president.

Regents fired John Lilley less than three years after he was hired.

Chairman Howard Batson cited the board's lack of confidence in Lilley's ability to unite various Baylor constituencies.

Batson later said the decision had nothing to do with a Nevada attorney general investigation into alleged wrongdoing at the University of Nevada, Reno, where Lilley was president from 2002-05.
