Sentence Recieved for Marietta Duo for Illegal Horsetrack

Marietta, OK – A Love County District Court judge has formally sentenced two men who earlier pleaded guilty to conspiracy in connection with the operation of an illegal horse racing track in southern Oklahoma.

Attorney General Drew Edmondson says 44-year-old Arturo Cavazos and 42-year-old Juan Antonio Lopez each received a five-year deferred sentence yesterday.

Each man will also have to pay a $65,000 assessment. The assessment will be distributed equally between the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission and the attorney general's office.

Authorities charged Cavazos and Lopez in February for operating the unlicensed track known as Rancho El Nevado. Cavazos owned the land on which the track is located and Lopez served as the race organizer at the track.

Prosecutors say the track conducted illegal races from July 2004 to August 2007.
