AARP Promotes Bi-partisanship

Oklahoma City, OK – The head of the nation's largest elder advocacy group says the presumptive presidential candidates must work with members of both major parties to find solutions to the problems facing elderly Americans.

Thomas Nelson, the chief operating officer of AARP, says those problems are primarily health care and long-term financial security.

Nelson visited the state Capitol yesterday in conjunction with AARP Oklahoma's observation of the organization's founding 50 years ago.

He says bipartisanship is the primary message of the organization's Divided We Fail campaign, which he says is a national election-year effort to engage the public, businesses, nonprofit groups and elected officials to provide affordable, quality health care and long-term financial security for everyone.

The event recognized 50 Oklahomans over the age of 50 who have made a difference in the lives of others, including Lt. Gov. Jari Askins; Attorney General Drew Edmondson and former Gov. George Nigh.
