Lawton, Ok. – Representatives from the Library of Congress and the AARP will conduct two training sessions for volunteers who would like to take part in the Veterans Histroy Project work. The training session for volunteers from the community is set for Thursday, Jan. 23, 2--4:30 pm, at Cameron University Student Activities Building, in the 300 block of University Drive, Lawton.
The second session for Cameron University student volunteers is set for 5--6 pm.

Lawton, Ok. – Cameron University kicks off the spring semester with its School of Business luncheon forum Friday, January 24, on the topic of "Is It Time to Get Back into the Stock Market?" Presenter will be CU finance professor Dr. T.K. Bhattacharya.
Those interested in having lunch during the forum are invited to enjoy the cuisine at the university's Shepler Center's Will Rogers Room for $4 plus tax by arriving at 11:45 a.m. The presentation is free and it is expected to start about 12:15 p.m. and be completed by about 1 p.m.

Lawton, Ok. – Cameron University President's Partners, about 200 area individual and business partners providing annual financial support for university projects, are funding 132 scholarships for first-time freshmen entering Cameron for the Fall 2003 semester. Sixty of the scholarships are to be presented by staff recruiters, 72 are to be distributed by faculty, according to discipline.

Lawton, Ok. – According to the state department of agriculture information, the danger for grassfires in the Sooner State is going up as the dry spell continues. A check of the climatological date shows that so far for January, the southwest area of the state is below normal in its precipitation by about 2.2 inches.

Lawton, Ok. – The new Cameron University license plate is black on a white background and includes Cameron's seal. The plates are numbered and considered in the same category as other personalized plates.

McAlister, Ok. – Witnesses that included family members of his murder victims heard the final statement of Jay Wesley Neill last night just before the lethal injection started at the State Penitentiary in McAlester. Neill said he was sorry for what he did. Three bank employees were stabbed multiple times and a customer was shot to death. Three more bank customers who were shot survived.

Lawton, Ok. – Cameron University Provost Dr. Don Sullivan has announced his plans to retire as of the end of December. Sullivan was first hired as Vice President for Advancement in 1992 and took his current post in July of last year.

Oklahoma City, Ok. – Since 1915, the state of Oklahoma has executed 132 men and three women inmates: one, a federal prisoner, by hanging; 82 by electrocution; and the rest in more recent years by lethal injection. Officials with the Department of Corrections at the State Penitentiary in McAlester have been preparing for the four executions set by the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals for this month.

Oklahoma City, OK – According to Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson whose office operates the Don't Call program which is under the new law effective January 1, more than 436,000 Oklahoma phone numbers are on the first quarter list which had a December 1 registration deadline. Telemarketers will be required to purchase a quarterly list to do business in Oklahoma starting the first of the year, and need to be in compliance as of February 1 with the first quarter's list.
