Science Friday Survives!!

Science Friday Initiative

Thanks to overwhelming member support during our Spring 2014 Fundraiser, KCCU will be able to carry sciFRI in FY 2015.

Science Friday® was spun-off from NPR a couple of years ago. Science Friday® is produced by the Science Friday Initiative, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. When NPR ceased distributing Talk of the Nation and Science Friday® last fall, Science Friday was picked up by Public Radio International.

KCCU has not been an affiliate of PRI in quite some time, simply because our listener support is not sufficient for us to afford PRI programming.

PRI is willing to cut a “Deal” to non-PRI stations so they can continue to carry Science Friday®.  KCCU’s quarterly fees for Science Friday® will amount to roughly $1,000 per quarter plus a premium we will have to pay up-front because we are not an affiliate.

To affiliate with PRI would require $4,000 up front and another $4K over the course of a year to broadcast Science Friday®. That could mean $8,000 per year.

PRI has not come up with a hard number yet, but we are anticipating a figure between $2,000 and $3,000 per year just for the rights to broadcast Science Friday®. So, we would still be looking at six or seven thousand dollars-per-year to broadcast one program on Friday afternoons.

Thanks to your support, Science Friday has survived.
